Maple-Blueberry Old Fashioned
Blueberries are one of my favorite fruits and whiskey is my favorite spirit, so naturally I had to mix something with the two of them. I didn’t want to drown out the precious whiskey, so I was frugal on the use of ingredients. I love to eat my blueberries in the morning, so naturally that’s where my mind went. What’s a more American breakfast than a stack of blueberry pancakes with Vermont maple syrup and an orange from Florida? Well, putting all of those things in a drink with Kentucky bourbon, a Maple-Blueberry Old Fashioned.
Maple-Blueberry Old Fashioned With Bourbon Recipe
I wouldn’t recommend having this for breakfast, but if you’d like a taste of what America has to offer, here’s the recipe:
1/8oz maple syrup
3-4 muddled blueberries
2oz bourbon whiskey
2 dashes orange bitters
Stirred & fine strained over rocks
Garnish with 2-3 blueberries and an orange peel
Whenever I have blueberries in the house, I always try to squeeze in making one of these because they are tasty. Although I love rye whiskey the most, bourbon is still incredibly flavorful and often works better with beverages like a Maple-Blueberry Old Fashioned or even just a classic Old Fashioned. When I made this drink for the first time, I remember having a gathering with friends soon after where I was essentially bartender and I made a few of these for the guys.
As I said, I wouldn’t advise drinking early in the morning with breakfast, but I didn’t say anything about brunch. If you’re at a brunch and you’re tired of the offerings being Bellini, Mimosa, and Bloody Mary, then perhaps I have a solution for you with this cocktail. The woody tastes of the whiskey with the sweet maple and blueberry is honestly such a wonderful combination and I cannot do it justice with words. That’s why I am sharing this recipe with all of you.
